BEF Stage 4 of 5

Take-Off

$5M–$15M. Scaling the systems and building a real management layer so the business runs on operational leverage, not founder hours.

Revenue range: $5M–$15M
Take-Off stage: The Take-Off stage of the BEF covers businesses doing $5M to $15M annual revenue. It is characterised by operational scaling — hiring managers, building institutional systems, and the founder transitioning to a strategic leadership role with genuine operational leverage.

Take-Off is the stage where operational leverage becomes real. Revenue is between $5M and $15M. The business has proven its model, has a genuine team, and is now building the infrastructure that allows it to scale without the founder's direct involvement in delivery. This is the stage where the investment in Supporting Systems, Success Triad, and Inner Core from previous stages starts to compound.

Businesses at Take-Off are hiring managers for the first time — not senior individual contributors, but people whose job is to develop and lead other people. This is a fundamentally different hiring problem. A manager who can run a team of eight is a different animal than the best senior operator, and the selection criteria, onboarding, and accountability structures need to reflect that.

The cash flow dynamics also shift at Take-Off. With $5M+ in revenue, the financial planning becomes more sophisticated. Working capital management, quarterly forecasting, and the relationship between EBITDA and owner distributions all become more consequential. Foundation work here means business-grade financial management, not just cash flow tracking.

How to recognise Take-Off

  • Revenue is between $5M and $15M with consistent growth trajectory
  • Hiring for management roles — not just delivery roles
  • Systems and processes are documented and largely founder-independent
  • The founder is working on strategy more than on delivery
  • Business could survive a month-long founder absence, even if imperfectly
