Success
$2M–$5M. Revenue stable, building a team. The "trapped by success" stage.
Success is the "trapped by success" stage. Revenue is between $2M and $5M and is reasonably stable. The business is profitable. There's a team. By any external measure, this is a successful business. The problem is that the founder is more embedded in the business than ever, the team can't function without them, and the personal freedom they expected success to deliver hasn't arrived.
At this stage, the business has outgrown its original model but hasn't yet built the infrastructure for the next one. The team exists but isn't yet capable of running the business. Systems exist but they're informal — the founder is still the exception handler for everything. The business is generating enough revenue that it's not urgent to fix anything, which is exactly why nothing gets fixed.
The work at Success is primarily in Supporting Systems and Inner Core simultaneously. The founder needs to design the role they want to play at $5M+ and build the business backward from there. That means documenting and delegating delivery, building a management layer that can handle exceptions, and confronting the personal question of what success was supposed to mean.
How to recognise Success
- → Revenue is stable between $2M and $5M but growth has plateaued
- → Profitability exists but owner drawings feel inconsistent with the revenue
- → The founder is managing a team but also still doing key client work
- → The business would struggle significantly if the founder took a month off
- → Strategic priorities keep getting pushed back because operations are always urgent
The key work at Success
- 01 Build a management layer — someone other than the founder handles exceptions
- 02 Define and document the senior delivery process so it can be replicated
- 03 Design the founder's role explicitly — what do they do, what don't they do
- 04 Address Inner Core: establish strategic planning cadence separate from operational management
